Congratulations to all involved in organizing the school’s annual celebrations of success, the 2008 Speech Night. It was an occasion of many mixed emotions; joy and pride for the students and families of those who were graduating from secondary school and those who were award winners, and sadness as we say farewell to young adults who have contributed so much to our school community over the last 5 years.

I have had very positive feedback from guests on the evening regarding the quality of our school captains in their roles as MCs, the engaging guest speaker, former scholar Mr Peter Anderson, the maturity and poise of the graduates as they accepted their certificates and awards and the creativity of the dancers, musicians, actors and artists. The evening not only showcased the talent and commitment of our 2009 graduates, but it also highlighted the ongoing power of our school’s three core values of Diversity, Creativity and Success.

Sadly, this was the last annual speech night which will be held in the Miethke Hall as it will be redeveloped into a school library in the latter months of 2009. In its 30th year, the school hall will be transformed into another important place of learning in the school. The School Captains’ valedictory speeches focused on the memories of the night’s graduates of many hot evenings and assemblies in the hall. They gave a fitting tribute to the role that the school hall has played in the life of generations of graduates and their teachers. The Old Scholars present on the evening added their memories.

Our guest speaker for the Speech Night was Mr. Peter Anderson a past scholar who had recently been appointed as the Chief Executive of the Australian Chamber of Business and Commerce. In his acceptance speech as the incoming Chief Executive, Mr. Anderson proudly acknowledged the fine education he received at Woodville High School and focused on the importance of the school motto “Ad Astra per Aspera – Reach for the stars.” Meredith Edwards Principal
